Authenticity
One thing I consistently observe among many lukewarm Christians and non-religious people alike is that they find Christianity boring. The whole system of traditions in which we worship our God is something that they find utterly boring, and at times I am in the same boat. I often find Mass and honestly just praying to be boring, and I’m not ashamed of this as I strongly believe it is good to be authentic. If you spiritually feel bored, embrace that while remaining faithful to Christ. It is through boredom that I can see Christ moving within my heart to create a stronger love for Him within me.
When we go to Mass and pray while feeling bored and spiritually unwilling, we are essentially saying to God;
‘I can’t be bothered to glorify You, but I don’t care as I will still choose to love and glorify You above all else’.
Even though our works are nothing in the eyes of Christ, God sees this decision to love Him through our free will and rejoices! Being authentic with God in such a way is indicative of the intimacy a person shares with God. Quite simply, the more real and open you are with God, the more real your relationship with God becomes and the more freely He can move within us. This growth in intimacy with God directly contributes to a closer and more deep relationship with God. Being at a level with God where you can authentically pour your heart out to Him with the expectation that He will do the same is the best. It is precisely at this stage where I refer back to the experience of lukewarm Christians, atheists, and apparently me 😜.
Mass is integral and so is praying through consuming sacred scripture, but I believe that boredom can stem from the belief that worship of God is limited to Mass and scripture. There are more ways to praise God. How many? Well that depends on how many people have existed EVER.
And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” - Matthew 13:52
This passage refers to the conversion of Jews to Christianity, combining the Old with the New to create new richness. I further see this as people using their God-given gifts to praise and glorify God in a way that no person has ever done before. There truly are as many ways to praise God as there are people throughout all of existence. This prompts the question that all must ask God;
How can I serve You with all I am in You?
This act does not merely lie in our gifts, but far greater! We are temples of the Holy Spirit, and so we must direct every fibre of our being toward the glorification of God! Through God, we understand the mission He has for our lives. It is precisely Mass, the sacraments and prayer that guide and fuel us in living out God’s good and full plan for our lives. This is a plan which WILL lead us to Sainthood. For me, I love to use the gift of creativity through writing and making videos to glorify God, with these being just some of the many ways I glorify God. It is ultimately through being authentically and unfearfully me that I glorify God, with this becoming more of a reality the more I give myself to Christ. The same is true for every single person! While there will be others glorifying God through similar or even the same means (such as multiple people writing), the glorification of God itself is entirely unique, reflecting the unique personhood of the vessel that is designed perfectly by God.
And so why do I mention boredom? Boredom itself is a feeling – neither good nor bad – but there is a danger associated with it. As I said earlier, boredom depends on what you do with it. Don’t get it twisted though, just because you feel a sense of boredom, it in no way indicates that God is unfulfilling. I’d argue that everything occurs for a specific reason. As we are created in the image and likeness of God, this experience of boredom must be intended by God. If God didn’t want boredom, it would not exist. But it is through boredom that God calls us to make temperate decisions that help us become more holy. The danger of boredom is linked with authenticity. People feel unrest caused by their boredom, but they conceal this experience out of fear that they are doing something wrong. Eventually they implode, abiding by the lie that a Christian life is not fulfilling. When we recognise that certain things don’t fulfill, we search. Many search their whole lives finding nothing for one reason or another, but it is through Christ that we find fulfilment. If you find yourself having to apprehensively and constantly justify why something is fulfilling and good, it isn’t. It’s the same reason why we see satanic opening ceremonies at the Olympics. The sin being advocated seeks constant and total acceptance in a bid for the advocates to feel a sense of fulfillment, but it will never be realised.
As St Augustine said, “our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” In authenticity, we need to recognise the reality of our personal experiences, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of truth. When I live my life for Jesus, I don’t have to constantly justify this choice to myself, and this is because it is peacefully and securely fulfilling. The more I seek the truth, the more I realise the truth that is present within my lifestyle. So I urge you to ask questions and to seek the truth, as you will undoubtedly find Jesus Christ - the source of all truth. It is through searching and finding Christ that we become more open to Him, allowing us to fearfully live our lives as the people He designed for us to be in fullness and in authenticity.
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31
“Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!”
Psalms 150:6
